The Institute hosted a major photographic exhibition in 2013 entitled 'Some Heavy Business...' dealing with the subject of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and severe depression which often besets PTSD sufferers.
The exhibition, staged on Floor A of the Institute building, featured photographs of present and past users of the Centre for Trauma, Resilience and Growth (CTRG), a specialist psychological trauma service, which serves the community in Nottingham, wider Midlands and beyond. The CTRG is a collaboration between Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust and the University of Nottingham and is also part of the Institute of Mental Health.
Photographs in the project were taken in the Bromley House Studio, located in the Bromley House Library, Nottingham. Every portrait was accompanied by a brief description of the event(s) experienced by each of the subjects.
The work of the CTRG is not just about the alleviation of symptoms but also the facilitation of resilience and post-traumatic growth. The CTRG has been at the forefront of research and practice in understanding how trauma can often be a springboard in people's lives towards new and deeper meaning and significance.
