The Nottingham Psychiatric Archive has two parts: first, a bibliography, and second, a collection of hard copies of documents.

The bibliography is limited to studies concerned with the development and use of psychiatric services in Nottingham, and with the epidemiology of severe mental illness in Nottingham - particularly of schizophrenia and acute psychoses. (It therefore does not contain references to publications on the many other types of research that have been conducted in Nottingham.) In particular, this part of the archive focuses on the work of Dr Duncan Macmillan, a Nottingham-based psychiatrist in the 1950-60’s and noted pioneer of “open” psychiatric hospitals - read more about this part of the archive.

A bibliography is required because of the unusual number of studies that have been carried out in Nottingham over the last 40 years or so, concerned with the development and use of psychiatric services, as well as the epidemiology of serious psychiatric illness.

The collection of hard copies of documents is not limited to psychiatric services and schizophrenia, but also reflects the interests of Dr John E.Cooper (Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry University of Nottingham and the archive’s trustee for the past 40 years) and his work with the World Health Organisation (WHO) on topics such as the classification of psychiatric disorders, case registers and the structure of psychiatric services.

All this has been made available for future generations of interested researchers by means of this archive. The bibliography is available here and the hard copies of documents are held in the official University of Nottingham Archive (at present on the King's Meadow campus in Nottingham):
