 fellow at the University of Nottingham with particular interests in dement
 ia and family carers\, patient and public involvement and engagement\, mix
 ed methods\, implementation science\, and patient-reported outcome measure
 s.\nAbstract: Apathy is frequently described as a common ‘neuropsychiatric
  symptom’ of dementia\, and it is associated with worse outcomes for the i
 ndividual and carers. Recent attempts have been made to create diagnostic 
 criteria for apathy in people with dementia\, however\, there is still muc
 h uncertainty around what constitutes apathy\, how it develops and what it
 s effects might be. My PhD was a mixed methods exploration of the concept 
 of apathy in people with dementia and MCI\, comprising qualitative intervi
 ews with people with dementia\, MCI and their carers\, and a quantitative 
 network analysis of apathy and related constructs. I will present my findi
 ngs\, challenge currently proposed diagnostic criteria for apathy\, and sh
 are an updated conceptual model that integrates existing literature and mo
 dels from different disciplines. This new model conceptualizes apathy as a
 t least a partially learned response to everyday difficulties people with 
 dementia face\, emphasizing that this is not just a neuropsychiatric sympt
 om caused by brain changes associated with dementia pathology\, but a publ
 ic health issue which could be improved by a variety of social and occupat
