We will focus on understanding how creativity allows neurodivergent peop le to share their unique experiences of the world around them. And how cre ativity – and masks! – can provide a safe space for neurodivergent people to communicate without barriers.\nThere will be talks from:\nPat Brundell\ ,Research Fellow in the Mixed Reality Lab\, co-lead of UoN Neurodiversity Staff Network\nJoe Killgariff\,Advanced nurse practitioner supporting chil dren with ADHD\nStephan Jon Cooper\,Mask-maker\, performer\, community art s facilitator\nChristine Thomas\,Fine artist\, interested in neurodivergen ce\, domesticity\, relationships\n \nThe seminar will be followed by an ar t exhibition that is the work of Christine Thomas.\nChristine Thomas\, a n eurodivergent artist\, was the recipient of an artist studio residency at BACKLIT\, as part of a collaborative project between QUAD\, BACKLIT and CA NDAL to support a neurodivergent artist to develop their artistic practice .\nAs a result of this residency\, Christine has produced the project Neur otype Narratives.\nOpen from Monday 1 July 2024 – Friday 23 August (please note the gallery is open Monday to Fridays only during working hours)\n  \nAbout the Residency\nQUAD\, BACKLIT and CANDAL partnered to develop a pr ogramme of arts-based activity and professional development support specif ically for creative practitioners that have neurodivergent condition(s). T his was a focused platform to spotlight the challenges that neurodivergent practitioners face with the objective of supporting an ND artist to devel op a new body of work\, exploring elements of their lived experiences and processes that may differ from neurotypical behaviour. Applicants were inv ited to supply an expression of interest as part of the application proces s. The successful candidate was Christine Thomas\, an ND artist based in D erby. Christine was offered a studio space at BACKLIT for 9 months and a b ursary towards artist materials. During Christines time\, QUAD and BACKLIT have met with her\, providing one to one support. The result of her resid ency will be displayed as part of her exhibition at the Institute of Menta l Health.\nThe applicants that were not selected for the residency were in vited to join a new ND network named NAN (Neurodivergent Artist Network). This is a collective of ND artists who can continue to work collaborativel y to support each other with artistic and professional opportunities. This is a great legacy to the programme and continues to be led by QUAD and BA CKLIT. The NAN have been invited to produce work for other opportunities i ncluding the up and coming BACKLIT members exhibition.\nThe next phase wil l mainly focus on the future development of NAN and continuing to explore best ways to support the ND artistic community.\n \nChristine says about h er work:\nFor the residency at Backlit\, Quad and CANDAL\, I have consider ed different aspects of narrative around being neurodivergent. Drawing on my own lived experience and that of others\, I have visualised how convers ations can feel and then expressed through the formal qualities of an imag e. I have used textiles to explore two dialogues inspired by the Double Em pathy issue\, the first piece is a ND to ND conversation while the second is a ND to NT conversation.  \nChristine Thomas's website\n \nAbout Derby QUAD\n\nDerby QUAD is an international centre for engagement in contempora ry art and film\, based in Derby. We collaborate and work in partnership with others to deliver activities that make a positive impact on their lives. QUAD’s Arts Programme Manager Peter Bonnell is neurodivergent\, having bee n diagnosed with autism in 2021.
