DESCRIPTION:Event Co-presenters:\nDr Ayokunmi Ojebode PhD\, FHEA\nChristell
e Tulia and Madeleine Laini\, Co-Directors of Kiyana Wraps\n- Introduction
to Kiyana Wraps\n- Demonstrations on how to style head-tie/headwrap (Made
leine Laini)\nVisit the Kiyana Wraps website.\nConnect with Kiyana Wraps o
 n Instagram.\n \nAbout the study:\nExisting scholarship on dementia studie
s indicates a dearth of more inclusive approaches and interventions adapte
d to best support diverse ethnic communities with healthcare challenges in
the United Kingdom. There is evidence that over 25\,000 people from Black
\, Asian and minority ethnic communities (henceforth ethnic communities) a
re living with Dementia in the UK African-Caribbean population (House of C
ommons\, 2013). Tuerk and Sauer (2015) speculate that the number of people
with dementia in Black\, Asian and minority ethnic communities will incre
ase by 7-fold as against the assumed doubling when compared with the Indig
enous White population by 2025. Therefore\, this project responds to the u
rgent need for evidence-based\, culture-appropriate and adapted interventi
ons for people with dementia and carers from UK’s ethnic communities.\nThi
s study will investigate an exquisite London-made hair cover/headgear (Kiy
ana wraps) as a potential therapeutic source and social and pleasurable ac
tivity for people with dementia. The Kiyana wrap resonates deeply with the
cultural\, historical\, religious and personal identities of especially p
eople with dementia from the UK’s ethnic communities. The Alzheimer’s Asso
ciation (2024) posits that choosing appropriate clothing can promote posit
ive self-esteem and dignity in people with dementia. Likewise\, the Alzhei
mer's Society (2021) confirms that personal grooming\, like manicures or p
edicures\, massage\, or hair appointments\, is therapeutic and could impro
ve the social well-being of people with dementia.\nPractically\, people wi
th dementia wear clothing to show affiliation\, communication\, and indepe
ndence and for physical and psychological comfort. Some Afro-Caribbean cul
tures and religions promote hygiene and standards among their adherents\,
such as carrying or wearing peculiar accessories or specific garments cove
 ring the head or body (Truswell\, 2013). Notably\, Keens-Betts (2015) comm
ents that her mother\, diagnosed with dementia\, found the Kiyana wraps he
lpful for her aesthetics\, grooming\, and self-esteem. Donning the headgea
r and wraps closely linked to elegant African Queens by an older woman wit
h dementia could boost their morale and social status\, giving them the fe
eling of ‘tallness and tidiness.’ The Kiyana wrap is summer-friendly and c
ould prevent patients from extreme colds\, viral infections\, and end-of-l
ife symptoms\, as it will help slow the patient's facial deterioration and
create more opportunities for social engagement.\nThis study is a novel a
rt-based intervention to foreground adaptive clothing as a therapeutic and
mnemonic source and a social history of people with dementia and carers i
 n the UK’s ethnic communities.\n \nAbout Kiyana Wraps:\nKiyana Wraps is an
