DESCRIPTION:Speaker:  Deborah Oliveira PhD RN\, Research Fellow\, Universit
y of Nottingham\, Institute of Mental Health\nTitle:  Willingness to adher
e to the recommended alcohol consumption guidelines for potential dementia
risk reduction: Results from a national cross-sectional survey of people
aged 50 and over *\nAbstract:\nThere is strong evidence that about a third
of all dementia cases can be attributed to modifiable risk factors\, such
as diabetes\, high blood pressure and obesity\, and that reducing these r
isk factors in middle age could potentially reduce dementia risk in later
life.\nThe consumption of alcohol to excess has been considered to be an i
ndependent predictor of dementia as it causes irreversible detrimental eff
ects to the brain structure. It is therefore important to understand wheth
er people are willing to adhere to the current alcohol consumption guideli
nes in order to reduce their risk of having dementia in the future.\nIn th
is seminar\, Dr Oliveira will present the results of a national online sur
vey in which a non-probabilistic sample of 3\,948 individuals aged 50 and
over were asked about their current levels of alcohol intake and willingne
ss to comply with the UK recommended alcohol limits to potentially reduce
their dementia risk. Multivariate logistic regressions were used to identi
fy those who are at the highest risk for non-adherence to alcohol guidelin
es. Implications of the study results to research and clinical practice wi
ll be discussed in relation to dementia risk reduction.\n * This study was
funded by the Alzheimer’s Research UK Midland.\nTo register your attendan
