The Centre was the first centre of excellence launched by the Institute of Mental Health in 2011. Its work is focused on research and development in partnership with justice agencies. The Centre is the lead and founder member of the Better Policing Collaborative (BPC), a partnership of universities and constabularies focused on evidence-based policing.

The Centre seeks to discover the best ways to deliver healthcare in the justice environment and secure health settings. It brings together research, policy, and practice in the fields of mental and general health care and criminal justice, through an innovative multi-disciplinary approach.

  • Secondary data-based economic studies and evaluations
  • Organisational development policy and resource use
  • Clinical research methodology and research practice
  • Studies of secure environments and clinical and design considerations of new builds
  • Youth justice and early intervention
  • Evidence based policing
