"Roots" by Angie Martin ran from October 2017 to January 2018. The solo arts exhibition by Nottinghamshire artist Angie Martin was entitled 'Roots' and coincided with World Mental Health Day.

The exhibition considered the concept of recovery in mental health, drawing parallels with nature and the need to nourish the roots and encourage growth.

World Mental Health Day, according to the Mental Health Foundation, provides an opportunity ‘for all stakeholders working on mental health issues to talk about their work, and what more needs to be done to make mental health care a reality for people worldwide’. The 2017 theme set by the World Federation for Mental Health was mental health in the workplace.

Angie Martin said: “Painting has taught me to be ‘here now’ and how to connect to my ‘natural self’. My paintings mirror the connection between nourishment for the growth, individuality and beauty of trees and humans.”

The Institute has an ongoing calendar of art exhibitions in order to provide a platform for mental health service users and artists who have a special interest in mental health to show their work. ‘Roots’ was the tenth major exhibition staged by the Institute.
