The Nottingham Multiple Sclerosis Research Group (MSRG) is an interdisciplinary collaboration between the University of Nottingham, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and the Institute of Mental Health.

Our research focuses on:

1. diagnostics
2. investigating disease modifying therapies
3. symptom management.

Straddling these three foci are our Neuroimaging and our Clinical implementation themes.

Our Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) activities are core to all our research. Our research investigates diagnostic developments, treatment optimisation, rehabilitation practices, and health services and implementation strategies.

Given the COVID-19 pandemic, we have also started conducting research to examine the impact of COVID-19 on people with MS. We conduct basic sciences and laboratory research, large-scale multi-centre randomised controlled trials, systematic reviews, cohort studies, and qualitative and implementation research.

In 2019/20, we have a portfolio of 32 studies. Our research grant income of over £27 million, is from major funders including the UK National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), the UK MS Society, MRC and PCORI from the USA. We also undertake commercial trials. Since 2012, our research has led to over 100 publications in leading scientific publications. The MSRG supports and trains the next generation of clinicians and researchers interested in MS. In 2019/20, we have 4 postdoctoral researchers, 18 doctoral students, 4 MSc students, and 2 undergraduate medical students working on our projects.
