Human rights are at the core of much of the work of the Institute. Our work aims to bring together those with an interest in the intersection of mental health and human rights, to work on collaborative ways to educate, promote, and enhance human rights in a variety of contexts including law and practice. The Institute’s Centre for Mental Health and Human Rights is led by Professor Ralph Sandland and Dr Grace Carter.

The Centre has three distinct aims:

Congratulations to our colleague Dr Ahmed Hankir who has been awarded one of only six World Health Organisation (WHO) Director-General’s Health Leaders Awards, "for his work in empowering, dignifying and humanising people living with mental health conditions."

Last week saw the global launch of the World Health Organisation (WHO) QualityRights e-training on mental health featuring Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus the WHO Director-General.

As we continue our collaboration with the World Health Organisation, the latest paper from our Centre for Mental Health and Human Rights explores quality of care and human rights in mental health facilities in Ghana.

The Centre for Mental Health and Human Rights at the Institute of Mental Health has been designated as a new World Health Organization (WHO) collaborating centre on Mental Health, Disability and Human Rights.
