The Nottingham Psychiatric Archive is dedicated to the memory of Dr Duncan Macmillan, O.B.E, B.Sc., M.D., FRCP(Ed).

The Nottingham Psychiatric Archive is under the authority of the Head of the Academic Department of Psychiatry at the University of Nottingham (currently Professor Martin Orrell), who delegates every-day running to the Keeper of the Archive (currently Dr Stuart Leask). The archive includes records of the unusual number of studies that have been carried out in Nottingham over the last 40 years or so, concerned with the development and use of psychiatric services, as well as the epidemiology of serious psychiatric illness. In particular, the archive focuses on the work of Dr Duncan Macmillan, medical superintendent of Mapperley hospital for 27 years, and noted pioneer of “open” psychiatric hospitals

The collection is not limited to psychiatric services and schizophrenia, but also reflects the interests of Professor John E.Cooper (Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry University of Nottingham) and his work with the World Health Organisation (WHO) on topics such as the classification of psychiatric disorders, case registers and the structure of psychiatric services.
