A case study of AI-generated images and character descriptions. Presented by Dr Emma Putland, a Senior Research Associate working on the ‘Public Discourses of Dementia’ project at Lancaster University, will present on some recent research analysing AI-generated representations of dementia.

Dr Emma Putland, a Senior Research Associate working on the ‘Public Discourses of Dementia’ project at Lancaster University, will present on some recent research analysing AI-generated representations of dementia.

The talk presents two case studies:

1. 171 images generated in Stable Diffusion (version 1.4) using the text prompt ‘dementia’
2. 52 character descriptions generated in Sudowrite for characters who were specified as either having dementia or seeing someone with the syndrome (totalling 22,638 words)

The talk considers how artificial intelligence (AI) models have the potential to generate outputs that reproduce particular stereotypes and social biases surrounding dementia. It reflects on the challenges and opportunities of analysing AI-generated outputs, and proposes future research directions for this rapidly advancing and interdisciplinary area.
