The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) have awarded £1.26m to health, academic, charity and industry partners to develop a new network to develop non-invasive brain stimulation for treating mental health conditions.

The NeuroMod+ network will focus on developing non-invasive brain stimulation (magnetic, electric, or focused ultrasound) for treating mental health conditions and establish a network of partners from academia, NHS, and industry. The research here at Nottingham includes stimulation studies using focused ultrasound, which can penetrate deeper into the brain than other conventional neuro-modulation interventions and is potentially more precise.

The team will develop computerised and mathematical modelling of the effects of these new technologies for depression and anxiety in younger people and adults, as well as testing out the research in pilot intervention studies

The network is led by Imperial College, with colleagues from the Institute of Mental Health, NIHR MindTech, and the University of Nottingham collaborating, including Professor Marcus Kaiser, Professor Richard Morris, Professor Dorothee Auer, Professor Stephen Jackson, Professor Mark Humphries, and Professor Stephen Coombes. The team will work with the manufacturers of machines that produce the neuromodulation stimulation to refine their use for the patient population.
