Elena Nixon is an Assistant Professor in Applied Neuropsychology, based in the Institute of Mental Health and the Academic Unit of Mental Health and Neurosciences, School of Medicine.

Elena oversees the research of our postgraduate students as the Unit Lead for Postgraduate Research and is involved in various other roles in postgraduate student academic and pastoral support, and research training and development; including being the Training Lead on the Midlands Mental Health and Neurosciences DTP programme for healthcare professionals, and Institution Pathway Lead on the ESRC DTP programme in Psychology, and in Health and Wellbeing. 

Elena’s own research spans across a range of areas in mental health with a particular focus on mood and anxiety in clinical and non-clinical states. She is an active member of the IMH Mood Disorders Centre of Excellence and has led projects that have explored factors affecting the mental wellbeing and behaviour/performance of young people, medical students/higher medical trainees, healthcare staff, and individuals with psychopathological conditions involving maladaptive emotional and cognitive states. Her research also involves developing and/or assessing mental health interventions, e.g., Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, as well as digital and neural methods, aimed at improving mental function and/or wellbeing in various populations. Elena holds teaching roles across undergraduate and postgraduate levels, mainly in the BMedSci programme, and the MSc course in Mental Health Research and Practice on which she convenes the modules 'Models and Approaches in Mental Health Research' and 'Clinical Psychology'.
