Clay Transformations was a project that formed part of the "Creative Practice as Mutual Recovery" (CPMR) programme.

Using a mixed methods approach, it aimed to assess the extent to which involvement in clay workshops promoted the well-being and ‘mutual recovery’ of a group of 42 participants, including mental health service users, artists and practitioners.

Findings highlighted the benefits of clay work deriving not only from the process and outcome of this work but also from the context in which it took place. The inclusive and artist led workshop environment and the absence of any formal psychotherapeutic content helped to promote the confidence and cohesion of participants and minimised the hierarchical divisions often experienced in traditional therapeutic settings. Project impacts were also broad and sustained, transcending the individual and the group to incorporate wider settings.
