Elaine Argyle has a first degree in sociology, master's degrees in social policy and social work, a diploma in health studies and a PhD in social policy/social gerontology from the University of Sheffield.

In addition, she is an experienced health and social care practitioner and dually qualified both as a social worker (DipSW) and as a mental health nurse (RMN). Her main research interests are in the areas of older age, mental health, the participatory arts and paid and unpaid carers.
