TRIPOD stands for TheRapeutic Interactions in Psychological therapy Of anxiety and Depressive disorders.

TRIPOD is a research project. The project aims to help psychological therapists find out what is helpful and what is unhelpful in the conversations they have with patients during their sessions. This knowledge will be used to help them offer better therapy for their patients over time, using a digital tool we will develop.

The purpose of Public Involvement in the research is to invite people with relevant experience and expertise, who are not part of the direct research team, to advise on the study. The project is about psychological therapy and using machine learning to support therapists to improve. These are emotive subjects and we are keen that we listen to and understand where reservations might be but also finding positive solutions to develop the research. In order to hear opinions that have valuable experiences in psychological therapy style we have created two groups. The Public and Patient Involvement Group and the Stakeholder Group. These groups will meet at different times and for different purposes, but we hope we have built a plan that means conversations do not happen in isolation but are carried between the groups and back to the research project team.

Culture of the groups

We want the groups to be places where a range of opinions and thoughts can be heard, without them having to be complete thoughts or final opinions. Where everyone is encouraged to share their thinking on the conversation or discussion taking place. We know with virtual calls this is not always as easy as it sounds. We will make sure we monitor chat boxes in meetings and read out comments or move the conversation in certain directions so we can help to bring everyone’s voices out.

We commit to a culture of active listening, inviting opinions that may be different to our own and we ask that group attendees also bring an attitude of openness and reflection and be prepared to consider the thoughts of others, even if of an opposing perspective. We hope if we all bring this approach to conversations, we can consider positive solutions and be honest about challenges we see in what we talk about. We hope this is the foundation of creating vibrant and respectful conversations throughout the life of the project.
